Keep your dog moving...
THERAPY TEAM ACADEMY
There’s more to being a therapy team than having a friendly dog. You and your dog must work together and that means knowing your dog well enough to recognize her stress, translating her body language for the person or group you’re visiting and keeping her safe and having fun.
The good teams make it look easy, but don’t be fooled. There’s a lot of learning and hard work behind all those smiles.
In our program, you’ll begin to understand volunteering from your dog’s point of view. You’ll learn how your dog experiences the world through smell, sight & sound — and how to apply this knowledge to become a better, more proactive handler. We’ll talk about what to expect during a visit & how to prepare your dog (& yourself) for the challenging noises, sights & smells in different environments.
In addition, we’ll help you appreciate how difficult being a therapy dog can be by introducing concepts like proxemics (the study of human use of space in a social context) and kinesics (the study of body language). You’ll learn by working with your own dog, learn what she needs and wants from you as a leader.
We have training options for you to learn with and without your dog. Attend an intense one-day seminar without your dog or experience our combination learning program which includes the seminar and our 6-session training course with your dog.
